In addition to the four examples given here, our teams work alongside JFA-PFE visiting prisons, speaking to prisoners and staff in both open air and chapel services as well as on a one to one basis. This involvement in the prisons helps ensure spiritual provision is relevant to the situation in each prison.

S/1 Support of the JFA-PFE chaplain coordinators team
There are now over 70 members of the growing chaplain coordinator team run by Justice for All - Prison Fellowship Ethiopia (JFA-PFE) with 2 National co-ordinators, 6 regional co-ordinators who work in several prisons and the remainder serving in individual prisons providing a wide ranging active holistic Christian ministry amongst the men, women and children in prison. Sponsorship - from as little as £25 per month for those working in a single prison - will help to ensure that good news and hope can flourish in situations where bad news and a sense of hopelessness may sometimes appear to prevail. At the beginning of 2013 there are opportunities to sponsor chaplain coordinators in the following regions: Addis Ababa - 2 national chaplain coordinators 1 now sponsored - 1 remaining Amhara Region - 5 chaplain coordinators needing sponsorship. 2 now sponsored - 3 remaining Oromiya Region - 5 chaplain coordinators needing sponsorship. 3 now sponsored - 2 remaining Benshangel Gumuz - 1 chaplain coordinator needing sponsorship Now sponsored Afar Region - 1 chaplain coordinator needing sponsorship Now sponsored Region 14 - 4 chaplain coordinators needing sponsorship SNNPR - 3 chaplain coordinators needing sponsorship 1 now sponsored - 2 remaining Tigray - 1 chaplain coordinator needing sponsorship Federal - 1 chaplain coordinator needing sponsorship Updated 30 April 2013. If you are interested in finding out more do please contact us . S/2 Organising and leading the Annual Chaplains' Conference Ethiopia is about five times the size of the UK so it is important that at least once a year the chaplains should have an opportunity to come away from their isolated locations and meet with others for teaching and fellowship. We have now been given the privilege of running an Annual Conference for them. Led by Trustee Mike Ducker, the 2012 one was held in November when 46 chaplain coordinators travelled from all over Ethiopia to attend. S/3 Construction of Chapels An ongoing programme of chapel building is also being undertaken by JFA-PFE and chapels have been built in the men’s sections of some 70 prisons. In addition there are also chapels in the women’s sections of a number of prisons. We are delighted that the money has now been raised to build the next one. Work should start soon God willing - look out for updates. S/4 Evangelism and teaching A report in 2010 showed that over the previous 9 years the total number of prisoners reached by evangelical services was 250,000 and that of these 55,800 received Jesus Christ as personal Saviour and Lord and were baptised. Most of these prisoners are now released and added to the Churches of their districts. There are an estimated 13,000 Christian prisoners worshiping Jesus in Ethiopian Prisons and keen to study the Scriptures. Central to this is the availability of Bibles and we have been able to support the purchase of these from Bible Society Ethiopia at subsidised rates. In addition to the printed versions there are also "Proclaimers" which are audio Bibles that can be set up in the chapels. Study courses include the Bible Correspondence courses by Emmaus Bible School and Mekema Group Bible Studies which are attended by all the Christian prisoners and through which resources such as Bibles and Study material are made available. |
