In addition to the four examples given here, our teams work alongside JFA-PFE visiting prisons, speaking to prisoners and staff in both open air and chapel services as well as on a one to one basis. This involvement in the prisons helps ensure spiritual provision is relevant to the situation in each prison.

S/1 Support of the JFA-PFE chaplain coordinators team
There are now around 80 members of the growing chaplain coordinator team run by Justice for All - Prison Fellowship Ethiopia (JFA-PFE) with 2 National co-ordinators, 6 regional co-ordinators who work in several prisons and the remainder serving in individual prisons providing a wide ranging active holistic Christian ministry amongst the men, women and children in prison. Regular financial contributions in support of members of this team help to ensure that good news and hope can flourish in situations where bad news and a sense of hopelessness may sometimes appear to prevail. Currently there are 59 Chaplain Coordinators spread round the following Regions that we are privileged to share in supporting by focused prayer as well as contributing to the financial costs. Amhara Region - 8 Chaplain Coordinators including 1 Regional . Oromiya Region - 30 Chaplain Coordinators including 3 Regional. Afar Region - 2 Chaplain Coordinators Region 14 - 2 Head Office Chaplain Coordinator Leaders SNNPR - 8 Chaplain Coordinators Tigray - 5 Chaplain Coordinators Somalia - 1 Chaplain Coordinator Harari - 1 Chaplain Coordinator Benshangul Gumuz - 1 Chaplain Coordinator Diredawa Chartered City Federal Prison - 1 Chaplain Coordinator (Updated 18 November 2020) If you are interested in finding out more about the chaplaincy work do please contact us S/2 Hosting the Annual Chaplains' Conference Ethiopia is about five times the size of the UK so it is great if at least once a year the chaplains can have an opportunity to come away from their isolated locations and meet with others for teaching and fellowship. We have now been given the privilege of hosting their Annual Conference. The most recent one was in January 2019 with trustees Bob Spratt and Di Gilmore being present along with Di's husband Boyd and supporter Tim Coleman. S/3 Construction and equipment of Chapels An ongoing programme of chapel building is also being undertaken by JFA-PFE and chapels have been built in the men’s sections of some 70 prisons. In addition there are also chapels in the women’s sections of a number of prisons. The next new chapel is in Bahir Dar at an estimated cost of £16,625.00. The full amount has been raised towards this project and work was progressing well on site until interrupted by Covid-19. Project costs are calculated in Ethiopian Birr and the sterling amount transferred will be at the current exchange rate at the date of transfer. There are no deductions for admin or any other reason here in the UK. In the event of over subscription for a specific project any surplus will be applied to another similar prison related project in Ethiopia. S/4 Evangelism and teaching Figures produced in 2018 showed that over the previous 9 years the total number of prisoners reached by evangelical services was in the region of 250,000 and that of these 82,200 received Jesus Christ as personal Saviour and Lord and were baptised. Central to this is the availability of Bibles and we have been able to support the purchase of these from Bible Society Ethiopia at subsidised rates. In addition to the printed versions there are also "Proclaimers" which are audio Bibles that can be set up in the chapels. Study courses include the Bible Correspondence courses by Emmaus Bible School and Mekema Group Bible Studies which are attended by all the Christian prisoners and through which resources such as Bibles and Study material are made available. Prison Chaplain Coordinators are sometimes able to also make sure that people who have received the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour whilst in prison, on release receive a stamped and sealed paper to whichever denomination they wish to have fellowship. By this procedure they help to ensure the former prisoner is mentored and makes progress as a disciple of Christ. |
