Twinkle of Hope and REFUGE
SUPPORTING THE CARE OF PRISONERS' CHILDREN IN ETHIOPIA
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JUSTICE FOR ALL - PRISON FELLOWSHIP ETHIOPIA
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JUSTICE FOR ALL - PRISON FELLOWSHIP ETHIOPIA
Project Aims
The primary aim of these two childcare projects run by our partners Justice for All – Prison Fellowship Ethiopia, supported by this charity, is the care of children where one or both parents is a prisoner in an Ethiopian prison. The projects also take account of the importance of parent-child relationships. Twinkle of Hope The focus of Twinkle of Hope which was founded in 2002 is children who are in prison with their prisoner mothers. Since it began it has ensured many of these children have benefitted from a balanced diet, health care etc. along with education appropriate to their age for the older ones. These projects, offer support for every child in the prisons where they operate and are maintained through regular as well as one off donations which are ring fenced for this purpose. Efforts now being made to try and ensure that older children of prisoners are not kept in the prison environment, means that children who are in prison with their mums will increasingly be below school age. Twinkle of Hope projects for these babies and younger children will focus on their general development and wellbeing including diet, health care, play etc. The number of children in Ethiopian prisons with their mothers is in the region of 600. REFUGE As noted above, growing numbers of school age children with prisoner parents are not now living in the prisons. It has become apparent, however, that on account of extreme poverty, there is sometimes no adequate care for them in the community. To help to address this special area of need, a separate project called REFUGE was piloted in 2010 and is now supporting the foster care of Ethiopian prisoners’ children living outside prison as well as helping maintain family ties. REFUGE operates on the basis of sponsorship for individual children and includes the possibility for sponsors to be kept informed of the child’s development. It currently costs £20 per month to sponsor a child through this project. Associated capital projects In addition to these two on going childcare programmes, capital projects also form part of the health and welfare provision for the women and children in Ethiopian prisons. These projects range from the installation of water and sanitation through to replacing the existing poverty related very crowded and inadequate accommodation with new dormitories including - among other things - provision for the special needs of women. In addition to a dormitory in Addis Alem Prison, it has been possible to provide a play area with slide, swings etc. for Twinkle of Hope children in Fiche Prison. Back in 1999 the children in this prison were part of the vision that launched what is now known as Twinkle of Hope |
The Twinkle of Hope and Refuge Projects are designed to help children like these whose mums and/or dads are in prison.
