CONSTRUCTION AND FURNISHING OF
NEW ACCOMMODATION FOR WOMEN and CHILDREN
SHENO PRISON
________________________________________________________________________________________
Location of Prison
Sheno is 43 miles north east of the capital Addis Ababa.
Introduction
Despite the efforts of the prison authorities there remain many poverty related problems in the prisons of Ethiopia. In the distribution of very limited resources many other pressing needs tend to take priority over the needs of prisoners.
It is here that our Ethiopian partners Justice for All-Prison Fellowship Ethiopia (JFA-PFE) have been busily occupied trying to do something. They have a site presence in 105 of the 120 prisons in the country and their intervention in practical projects includes such things as
1· improving personal hygiene and environmental sanitation
2· providing health services
3· academic and skill training and counselling
4· HIV/AIDS prevention and control, etc.
Although this is not a complete list it gives some indication of their dedication to being involved in trying to address needs in a holistic manner.
This proposed project is similar to other JFA-PFE designed accommodation already completed in other prisons including the federal Kaliti Prison and the prisons in Adama, Fiche, Assela, Ziway, Bonga, Chencha, Assebe Tefferi, Dilla, Jinka, Shire, Nekempte and Addis Alem.
The Prison population
The total prison population figures are fluctuating as many prisoners have been pardoned and released.
Project aims
This project is aimed specifically at identified needs of the women prisoners, some with young children.
Project funding
Plans and a detailed cost breakdown have been prepared and fund raising has been successfully completed
